We are grateful for the firefighters risking their lives to protect LA. This includes nearly 900 firefighters who are currently incarcerated and being paid as little as $5.80/day risking their lives to save others, sometimes in 24-hour shifts. They can be exploited because of an exception in the 13th Amendment that still allows for slavery as punishment for a crime. 4-ingredient biscoff lasagne This dessert is easy to make and its perfect for Valentine’s day 💕 Ingredients: 200g biscoff spread 400ml cold double cream 50g icing sugar 25 biscoff biscuits (you may need more or less depending on your dish) For the topping: 50g biscoff spread, melted 2 crushed biscoff biscuits 1 whole biscoff biscuit Method: 1. Whip the cream, icing sugar & 50g of Biscoff spread to soft peaks 2. Melt 150g of Biscoff spread in microwave until runny 3. Layer 12 biscoff biscuits in the dish, then drizzle over half the melted biscoff spread, 4. Dollop on the biscoff whipped cream, then repeat these steps. 5. Decorate with melted Biscoff spread, sprinkles crushed biscuits around the edge and place one whole biscuit in the middle 6. Trees that remain green through winter have long had a special significance to people throughout the world. In ancient times, evergreen branches and boughs were hung in the home to ward away illness and evil spirits. During the dark months of winter, filling the house with evergreens symbolized the strength and triumph of life. Today, Christmas trees fill homes with so much light and beauty and cheer during the winter and it’s a season I really look forward to every year. Here is a dish that captures a bit of the color and sparkle of a decorated tree - this “tree” is actually imprinted from a real fern frond which I thought worked perfectly as a miniature Christmas tree. After I press the fern into soft clay, I form the dish. After letting it dry, i fire the dish in the kiln at a low temperature to harden the clay. The ceramic dish is then handpainted with a green stain and I add “ornaments” one by one with different colored underglazes. The piece is then kiln-fired to over 2200F. This high temperature vitrifies the clay and melts the glaze. Then I can add the sparkle which is real 22kt yellow gold that is melted on in a final kiln firing #christmastree #evergreen #leafart #fern #sparkle

I’ve been thinking a lot about what “love” is. I think many people have defined it as the feeling of being seen and the act of seeing. I really like this definition. Of course, feeling loved is infinitely easier than loving someone, which means that accepting someone’s gaze is often easier than seeing someone for who they are. There are all sorts of impediments standing between two people that can distort or obstruct one’s view. In the case of my father and me, there was a language barrier, cultural differences, age, to name a few. Sometimes, it takes crisis to help remove the scales from our eyes to see each other. And sometimes it takes a really really long time. I know now, better than I ever did all those decades ago, why my father is sensitive to things like respect. It isn’t just a cultural thing (though that’s a big part of it). He grew up so much of his life feeling unseen by those he trusted and to feel that sort of dismissal from his 13 year old daughter must have been stinging indeed. Seeing someone doesn’t necessarily mean you excuse them. It just means that the work to change our expectations—that work is couched in love. #carrotcake #cooking #storytime #vegan
