After all the packing, planning, and chaos we’re finally in. Today felt like the first real day of settling in. I dropped the boxes in the kitchen, tucked the barstools into place, wiped down the counters, and started unpacking the same dishes that have followed us through every chapter. This beautiful girl is Harley. Frankie and I had been chatting earlier this week after she and her husband recieved devastating news about Harley’s health. We planned for me to go do a cast of both dogs later this week. I woke up to a message from Frankie early this morning saying they made the difficult decision to have Harley be put to rest this morning. I said I could be there before the vet arrived to make her cast. I was greeted with two happy labs, wagging tails and Harley’s gator toy in her mouth. Watching her be a grandmother to my little girl gives me a window into how she was with me. I remember breaking a fancy plate once as a child and looking up at her to see what her reaction would be and she said “oh no worries it’s just a plate, it was an accident and accidents happen to everyone” She immediately cleaned it up and hugged me like it was no big deal because it truly wasn’t to her. No shame, no guilt - just connection. I remember getting a D on a test in high school and being so upset because I studied really hard. When I showed her my grade she asked me if I tried as hard as I could and when I said yes through my tears she said “well then that’s all that matters to us” and gave me a big hug and never brought it up again. She doesn’t value things or performance over people and I’m so grateful that I feel the same way because of the way she raised me as a child. I love that she laughed along side Gigi in that moment with the egg. The egg might have surprised her but she immediately went in for connection and laughed with Gigi through the moment.
