Treating elephants often requires patience, perseverance, and a measure of good luck. Such was the case with this speared tusker, who took us on a Tsavo odyssey spanning a month and over a hundred kilometres before we were able to give him the help he needed. For months, this elephant lived with a snare cutting deep into his trunk. He’d taken refuge on community land, so our helicopter was deployed to guide him back to Tsavo East, where our Vet Unit could step in. The wound had healed over—but the snare would never have come off without intervention. Thanks to your support, he got the help he needed. Just like Enkesha, an orphan we rescued with a similar injury, he can go on to live a full, wild life. These are your donations at work—rescuing, protecting, and healing Kenya’s elephants. At just a day old, our SWT/KWS Meru Vet Unit collected this baby bull buffalo yesterday afternoon, after he was found all alone with no sign of his mother. We flew him down to Kaluku where’s he’s joined our growing menagerie of orphans being afforded a second chance. After his neck became caught in a poacher’s snare, this buffalo carried a horrific injury for more than 60 kilometres as he tried to outrun his fate! One of our SWT/KWS Anti-Poaching Teams identified the tracks of a buffalo dragging something. Experience suggested the animal had been snared and in attempting to free itself from the noose had managed to break the fixture to which it was attached. Now, the buffalo was both snared and dragging a heavy weight! They followed the trail for 25km until darkness forced them to call off the search. The next morning our pilot picked up the search from the last track coordinates; after 4.5 hours of flying, he located the buffalo. Suspicions were confirmed and by this time the buffalo had travelled over 60kms from where his tracks were first located. With every step forward he had only succeeded in tightening the cable snare in which he’d become trapped! We rapidly organised a veterinary intervention and are delighted to report the buffalo was both freed and given a positive prognosis for full recovery. Our conservation mission is made possible by our donors, if you’d like to contribute to operations that save lives, please donate on our website via the link below, where you can read the full details of this case: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/news #sheldricktrust #veterinary #animalrescue #wildlife #buffalo #tracks #rangers #animal #kenya #wild #sheldrickwildlifetrust #vet #wildliferescue #treatment #aerial #aviation #lifesaving

Treating a giraffe is a high-stakes operation. Immobilisation is essential, given their size and strength — but full anaesthesia is risky, due to their physiology. The patient is darted from the air. As soon as he begins to show signs of sedation, ground teams move in and rope his legs so they can safely lower him to a recumbent position. Once down, they secure his head. Giraffes cannot stand up without swinging their head, so this ensures the patient remains, quite literally, in safe hands for the duration of treatment. This treatment unfolded last year, following a sighting by Wildlife Works rangers. The giraffe had a cable snare around his neck; a favoured weapon of bushmeat poachers. Fortunately, it had not yet cut into the skin — but left untended, it could have caused a lethal injury. After emerging from her ‘flawless’ hiding place (watch to the end to see), Sulwe put both ears and all her heart into defending her precious shrub! Little Lenny was too busy playing with nanny Quanza to pose much of a threat, but Sulwe wasn’t about to let Keeper Evans get within a metre of it! Baby elephants can be so delightfully covetous over the most improbable objects! Sulwe and Lenny are both born to orphans rescued, raised, and rewilded through our Orphans’ Project! All of Earth’s creatures are connected. Every day, we have the power to be a positive force for our planet — a voice for the voiceless and a guardian to all. For us, this isn’t the work of a moment, but a mission that guides everything we do. Above is one example of our mission in action. In fact, this bull was among three elephants our teams helped in a single day. He had been struck by a poisoned arrow — a favoured tactic of poachers. Left untreated, the would could have had lethal consequences. Fortunately, help arrived in time. Our pilot spotted the bull during an aerial patrol, and the SWT/KWS Tsavo Mobile Vet Unit immediately mobilised to the scene. They anaesthetised the patient, helped him safely to the ground, and cleaned the wound. Thanks to swift intervention, he is expected to make a full recovery. And the team’s work didn’t end there: We went on to treat two more elephants that afternoon — and the very next day, we were back at it again. Your support empowers us to step up for nature. If you are able, please make a contribution this Earth Day, so we can continue to fight for our natural world. Every day is an occasion to celebrate the creatures with whom we share our planet. But today, 3rd March, the world comes together to honour wildlife and galvanise around their protection. It looks like Boozle checked her calendar too, celebrating her fellow orphan, and friend, rescued orphan black rhino Chamboi by giving him a little kiss (of sorts!) At the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, no orphan is left behind. Whether it’s feathered or four-legged, our mission is the same: to rescue them, nurture them according to their species’ unique needs, and ultimately reintegrate them into a protected wilderness when grown. As another rain storm sweeps through Kaluku, Keeper Peter whisks his eclectic herd of rescued orphans into an empty parking bay for shelter! Buffaloes Bibi and Gruff, Izera the eland, and Bombi the zebra mingle among themselves waiting for the rain to stop. Mr Bean has other ideas, sensing an opportunity to dig a mini burrow in the soft sand, where he can enjoy a power nap! With the 'flood waters' rising, he soon has to shift back and dig another, happy to be high and dry on his second attempt. #sheldricktrust #animal #wild #animals #rain #animalrescue #conservation #zebra #eland #warthog #kenya #nature #wildlife #sheldrickwildlifetrust

As the sun rises, our rescued orphans venture into the wilderness. Guided by their Keepers, they spend the day exploring and learning the skills they will need to live as wild elephants. It’s a long journey from orphaned baby to independent adult — for some taking upwards of a decade until they feel ready to reclaim their place in the wild — but every step in their journey paves the way. Elephant bulls have a reputation for being lone rangers, but we have found the opposite to be true. Males can often be found in small bachelor groups, with changing members who come and go for days, weeks, even months at a time. There may be no blood bond — as in a matriarchal herd — these intelligent and highly social creatures just want to be connected. ‘Dad’, named by our Keepers because he has fathered several of our ex-orphans’ babies, was born and raised a wild elephant. We consider him an old friend — and the feeling seems mutual! In the past, when he and several members of his crew were wounded by arrows, he brought them to us for help! Fortunately, this was just a short social call. Dad and his friend enjoyed a nap before disappearing back into the vast Tsavo wilderness. With your support, we are protecting the habitats that these bulls, and thousands of others, call home. It’s a boy! Sities just introduced us to her brand new baby. The first-time mum — an ex-orphan who we rescued 15 years ago — brought her son to our Ithumba stockades, allowing us and the dependent orphan elephant herd to join her in this celebration of new life. We have named Sities’s baby — seen here with nannies Kainuk and Turkwel — Sunni. A victim of poaching, you can reacquaint yourself with mum’s story at: swt.bio/sities #sheldricktrust #newbaby #baby #babyelephant #calf #mum #mother #newmum #wildlife #elephant #celebrate #sheldrickwildlifetrust #kenya #conservation #animalrescue

Imagine if your best friend was a rhino! Chamboi, an endangered block rhino, was less than a week old when he was found orphaned and alone. Brought into our care, he’s been hand-raised by our Keepers for the last 18 months. During the last few, he’s really begun to fill out, looking more and more like a rhino every day as his horn - that part of a rhino that once risk wiping out their various species - becoming more prominent. Chamboi is already an impressive example of his species, and he still have a lot more growing to do before he’ll reclaim his place in a protected wilderness. But for his Keepers, he’s their little boy and he loves nothing more than spending his days racing about with them, or being pampered at the mud bath. Discover his story - which you can support through an adoption of Chamboi - at: swt.bio/chamboi #sheldricktrust #rhino #blackrhino #wildlife #animalrescue #kenya #conservation #endangered #endangeredspecies #horn #protect #bestfriend #friends #nature #animal #sheldrickwildlifetrust

Enchanting babies, Lenny and Sulwe, were both born in our Umani Springs herd in December and they’ve taken the Kibwezi Forest by storm. It’s the beginning of a beautiful story that will continue to unfold over the following years — and lest we forget, these little babies are only here today because the lives of two orphans we saved, many moons ago. Since her birth, two years ago yesterday, Mwana’s had the Umani orphan herd wrapped around her tiny trunk. All desperate to nanny the little addition to their fold. That changed 3 months ago, with the births of Lenny and Sulwe. To her credit, Mwana quickly switched to a big sister role. But she still likes to show a little of her ‘Princess Mwana’ side every now and again, as Lenny was reminded when trying to take her cake - aka a stick - and eat it! #sheldricktrust #animalrescue #babyelephant #elephants #stick #cake #birthday #kenya #happybirthday #wildlife #wild #sheldrickwildlifetrust #Siblings #bigsister #princess

At 3-months old, little Lenny is still finding his footing, but that doesn’t stop him from exploring! For a baby elephant, every slip, slide, and wibble wobble is part of growing up. Lenny is the second calf born into our Umani Springs orphan herd - there are now three with the arrival of Sulwe on Christmas Day - and the firstborn of Lima Lima. When it comes to trunk twirling, Emoli’s demonstration in 2018 sets the standard! Emoli was a victim of drought, rescued in August 2017 when he was found lying motionless on the ground. His survival was touch and go for weeks, but with the support of the other orphans in our care at the time and the love of his Keepers – plus plenty of milk – he turned a corner. Today, he’s at our Voi Reintegration Unit in Tsavo, just a short hop from his place of rescue. It is here that he will reclaim his wild life and perhaps one day reconnect with extended family members. Our donor’s make these successes a reality. You can read Emoli’s story, and get involved, at: swt.bio/emoli #sheldricktrust #elephants #wildlife #kenya #trunk #twirl #animals #animalrescue #sheldrickwildlifetrust #babyelephant #africa #wild #tsavo #nairobi
