Whether they mean to or not, every singer puts their own stamp on a song—their own flavor, their own vowel shapes, and textures. They use different registers (or thickness/thinness). I truly love the original version of this song, and Loren Allred is simply divine. When I sing “Never Enough,” it always comes out sounding a little more theatrical. It’s definitely not something I’m doing on purpose; it’s just the nature of my voice and artistry. This used to bother me, but over the span of my career, I’ve learned to… surrender. All any of us artists can do is bring ourselves to a song. Of course, we should rehearse. Of course, we should listen deeply and take notes on the details that intrigue us. But at the end of the day, when singer meets song, it will always be unique from one artist to another. As we start this new year, can you welcome a little more surrender into your vocal practice?
