Sharks are resilient. And they shouldn’t have to be. I have seen sharks survive the most brutal human impacts, and still end up thriving afterwards. Every time I get in the water with the sharks I see a human impact. I have honestly never been in the water and not seen at least one of the sharks affected by humans. Broken jaws, cut off fins, fishing tackle, boat strikes, intentional objects like wood or jugs connected to the shark to exhaust them, and even bullet holes. And honestly, there are even more than the ones I have listed. Sharks are survivors. And we push them to the limits every day. Humans kill over 100 million sharks every year, and sharks kill less than 10 humans each year. Unfortunately seeing human impacts on sharks is something I experience every time I dive with them. But to see this brutal of an injury where a human deliberately cut off the shark’s fin is incredibly sad. And unfortunately is an injury I have seen many times before. Luckily the person let the shark live, and she can still survive. And when I saw her she didn’t look immaciated and did look relatively healthy, so I wish her the best of lucky surviving into the future. I often get asked, how strong are the tiger sharks? Well I don’t know an exact number, but they are certainly much stronger than we are as humans! When we redirect sharks, a lot of it is often redirecting our bodies around them while controlling a bit of their movement. I certainly do not have the power to completely control a tiger shark, and I would never stand a chance against one in a battle of strength.
