Let’s talk about Baltic amber teething necklaces because cute accessories aren’t always safe. These necklaces are marketed as natural pain relievers, claiming the amber releases succinic acid that absorbs through the skin to ease teething pain. But here’s the truth there’s zero scientific evidence to support those claims. No peer-reviewed studies have proven that amber actually works this way or at all for teething. Infact quite the opposite it was found that unless the skin is 392 degrees Fahrenheit nothing is being released from the necklace. What is proven? Strangulation is a real risk. These necklaces can catch on crib rails or clothing, especially dangerous during sleep. Choking is a concern. If the string breaks, small beads can easily become choking hazards. Skin irritation can happen. Some babies develop rashes or reactions to the amber or string. There have been bacteria found on necklaces of sick children at children’s hospitals seaming to be the cause of many of their illnesses. And these necklaces give a false sense of security. Parents may delay using safer, proven methods like gum massage, chilled teethers, or medication when needed. Even the AAP and FDA have warned against teething jewelry due to these risks. I decided to wait till as long as I could to tell my son I was pregnant. I would hate to have to untell him something at this age. However he was picking up on something…he had told me days prior I looked like Mary from the movie “star” Mary’s journey to Bethlehem. Although I took that as a compliment I knew I couldn’t wait much longer. I asked my son how Mary found out she was pregnant he said “she got her blessing” I said how will I know? He said with certainty, oh the angels will send you a letter. So I ran with that concept and sent a letter to the house from his big brother and all the angels in heaven. As a child safety advocate, I never thought I’d be the parent who lost a child at an amusement park but it happened. I became part of the statistic: 1 in 3 children will get separated from their caregiver in a public place. Thankfully, we had a plan. Thanks to being prepared and many conversations with my child on what to do in this situation I was reunited with my son immediately. Now, I share tips with other parents to help prevent this from happening: ✔️ Assign who’s on “kid duty” in your group ✔️ Take a photo of your child that morning, so you have a visual reference ✔️ Use tools like SafetyTat, which gives another adult a quick way to reach you if your child is lost I highly recommend keeping a pack (or two) in your parenting toolkit especially for crowded outings like amusement parks, fairs, or field trips. More than halfway there, and the kicks are getting stronger and so am I.
