When the church of San Nicola in Carcere was built in the 1100s, it incorporated three Ancient Roman temples from the 3rd century BC! These temples were: Temple of Spes, Temple of Juno, Temple of Janus. The church was built on top of the basements of these temples, which you can see outside the church, as well as inside. If you walk underground you will see the ancient Roman street level between the temples, and the actual basements of the temples! Imagine the ancient Roman people walking right there! 🤯 When the church was built, this underground section became a cemetery. That is why you can find some human bones too. This was the statue that the emperor Constantine made for the basilica of Massentius in the Roman Forum. It was a giant statue (12meters high/39 feet!) and the only fragments that made it to this day are exhibited in the Capitoline museum: the head, arm, knee, the feet.. So how are we looking at this whole statue today? Everything started from those fragments. The rest of the statue is lost, but it was digitally reconstructed based on those fragments and a deep study around them. This project came to this beautiful result thanks to the collaboration of @sovrintendenzacapitolina (Rome Cultural Heritage Department), @fondazioneprada and @factumarte. Since last year you can see from up close this incredible statue just walking in the courtyard of Villa Caffarelli 🤩 Are you going to see this? Want to discover more Rome gems with us? Want to discover more Rome gems with us? Join our walking tours at the LINK IN BIO! 😊🙌 Video doesn’t do justice to the real magic⤵️ Not too far away from the Circo Massimo you can find the beautiful Orange Garden As you walk inside this garden you will notice that the trees frame the dome of St Peter, in a special way.. The more you get closer to the dome, the smaller the dome gets. And viceversa, when you get away from the dome, it will look bigger! Making a video of this is not easy, as the real effect truly happens with the human eye (or for whatever other reason that we can’t explain 😅). This means that when you’ll see this in person, the effect will be much stronger than it seems in the video! 😊 This is also a super romantic spot, especially at sunset #rome #rometravel #rometours #rometourguide #romeitaly #whatitalyis #rometravelers #romeitalytravel #romethingstodo #romeplaces #romerightnow #rometraveltips #romesecrets #romeviews #hiddengems

Want to discover more Rome gems with us? Join our walking tours at the LINK IN BIO! 😊🙌 What is this place? Read this ⤵️ This cute little passage is one of the most photogenic corners of Rome and it is called “Arco dei Banchi” (Arch of the Banks). Why? Because after you walk through this little passage you end up in a little alley that used to be a courtyard. A courtyard belonging to the richest banker in Europe in the 1500s, Agostino Chigi. That’s why the name “Banchi” (banks). This is in fact where Agostino had his residency and bank in Rome (and where bankers in general had their shops). You might hear about Agostino Chigi more than once while looking for hidden gems in Rome.. 😉 💎 He in fact commissioned the decoration of his villa in Trastevere, Villa Farnesina, to none other than.. Raphael! (Hidden gem alert, take note!) 💎 Raphael also took care of Agostino’s chapel in Santa Maria dell’Anima, near Campo de Fiori (hidden gem alert n.2!) 💎 And he was eventually buried in the church of Santa Maria del Popolo, in a chapel decorated by Raphael and Bernini (hidden gem alert n. 3!) He was a man that definetely surrounded himself with stars. In life.. and in this arch 😉💫 #rome #rometravel #rometours #rometourguide #romeitaly #whatitalyis #rometravelers #romeitalytravel #romethingstodo #romeplaces #romerightnow #rometraveltips #romesecrets #romeviews #hiddengems

Ever seen these? Read below ⤵️ In Medieval times it was important to be buried within the perimeter of a church and its garden. Poor people were buried outside the church building, in dedicated mass graves. Wealthier people paid more to be buried inside the church building, often below the floor. But even then, periodically those graves were emptied and the bones placed in an ossuary. Back then it was not considered important to be buried in a personal tomb and be identified. What counted the most was to be buried within the church perimeter. Want to discover more Rome gems with us? Want to discover more Rome gems with us? Visit us at the LINK IN BIO! 😊🙌 Entering this little church is something special.. 🧡 It is so simple and raw, that you truly feel the spirituality in the air. Much more than in bigger and majestic churches, which sometimes feel like museums. This tiny church is very ancient. It is believed that the first church was built in the 500s! Then “newer” layers were added on top, like the Cosmati floors from the 1100s 😊 Things get even more spiritual where you get to see the very cella where St Benedict loved during his time in Rome. It is a small confined place, which was part of the ancient Roman house where this church was built on. Have you ever noticed this little church? Its bell is the most ancient in town, and also the smallest (only 45cm of diameter! 😍) #rome #rometravel #rometours #rometourguide #romeitaly #whatitalyis #rometravelers #romeitalytravel #romethingstodo #romeplaces #romerightnow #rometraveltips #romesecrets #romeviews #hiddengems
This is the Serra Moresca, the greenhouse that the prince Torlonia built next to his villa Today the land and the villa of the Torlonia family is a city park, called Villa Torlonia. You can walk inside this park freely (locals go there to exercise, relax, with their dogs..) and you can visit the Serra Moresca as well as other beautiful buildings next to it.
