@Simon Tung and I had been married for a little over a year when he found Mr. Socks. Our bakery @Macaron Parlour had only been open for a few months and we were stressed all the time, which led to fights over things that were so inconsequential that I don't even remember what they were about. But when he found this dirty grey kitten outside of our apartment, all the fights stopped. Our priorities shifted. We had to take care of our kitten. Since then, we've adopted many more cats and have fostered hundreds more. There are cats all over NYC who got their start in our humble apartment. The more stressed I am, the more I want to foster. To an outsider, it probably doesn't make sense why I would invite more chaos into my home when I'm feeling a loss of control in my life. Why bring in a kitten who needs to be fed around the clock or a fospice cat who needs medications? It's because I can channel all those feelings into making things safe for my fosters. I can't change what's happening in the world, but it doesn't take much to change the entirety of their world and for as long as I can do this, making a safe world for another cat is what gives me my peace. If you have never fostered before, consider this as a potential outlet for your energy. Maybe you'll find that helping another calms you down. Spending my energy meeting their needs and trying to figure out their wants makes me feel like I'm doing something good. Getting purrs of gratitude shows that my work matters to them. I know it can be hard to let your foster go, but knowing that I am sending them to a family that will continue my work and love them and that I am freeing up space to start the process over to change the life of another cat or kitten makes it easier. This is the time of year that @Meow Parlour has the toughest time placing cats in foster because so many people leave for the holidays. So if you're in NYC and having a tough time and you need a friend to get you through the rest of the year, we've got some good options for you. If you're not local, please reach out to an organization near you to see how you can make the world a safer place for a cat in need. #fosteringsaveslives
