April is Autism Awareness & Acceptance Month. Although April is recognized as the official month, it’s Autism Awareness & Acceptance Month every month on this page. For those who are unfamiliar, I (Thomas’ Dad) was diagnosed with Autism 3 years ago. So not only is Thomas diagnosed with Autism, but so is his father (me). This is a great example of how large the spectrum for Autism is. Although there can be similarities, no two people with Autism are the same, even for father and son. While Thomas is not able to be independent, I very much am independent. Thomas is considered nonverbal, but obviously I am not. We share a lot of similarities with Thomas being a little more extreme on the similarities we have. I have gone through life masking, even before getting an official diagnosis so that I could ‘fit in.’ I never wanted that for him. I never wanted him to not be able to be himself 24/7. I will never force him to have to mask. Thomas has been the only person I’ve ever truly been able to be fully unmasked around 24/7. Watching him grow up a lot of what he did reminded me of myself. I understood why he may not like something, why he may want something prepared a certain way, why certain things may bother him, and why he had a curiosity of different texture/scents/temperatures. I understood that because I am the same way. Autism does not have a look. For some it will be more obvious than others. Someone can watch Thomas and know right away he has Autism, but they will not know that the person pushing him in his stroller around the park also has Autism. You should never compare one person with Autism to another person with Autism. Inclusion and representation are important. Always has been and always will be. That’s what this page shows. This page only focuses on the positive aspects of Autism. Showing how Thomas explores the world in his own way. Thomas lives a very happy and enjoyable life.
